Buying a New Commercial Van in Malaysia: 8 Things to Check Before You Book
Published: 27 October 2026·Last updated: 27 October 2026
Before you book a new Daihatsu Gran Max or any commercial van in Malaysia, check price, stock, inspection, registration, financing and warranty.

Before you pay a booking fee for a new commercial van, confirm eight things: the itemised OTR price, stock status, inspection and registration, financing terms, warranty, body modifications, ongoing inspections and the dealer's authorisation. This checklist uses the Daihatsu Gran Max as the example, but it applies to any light commercial van. Rules change, so confirm details with us or the Road Transport Department (JPJ).

The checklist
- Get the OTR price in writing, itemised. Ask what is included: road tax, registration, admin charges, sign-writing, weighing and inspection, and insurance. See our guide to Gran Max OTR pricing.
- Ask whether it is ready stock or made to order. Our Panel Van and Semi-Panel Van are ready stock; the Pick-Up is made to order because the body is built after booking. Ask for an estimated delivery date.
- Understand the inspection and registration steps. New commercial vehicles go through a preliminary inspection before JPJ registration, according to BJAK's guide to PUSPAKOM inspections, which lists fees from RM30 to RM90 for that inspection. Our price list includes a RM180 weighing and inspection line. We handle all registration and inspection, so your van is ready to drive when you collect it. Ask us to explain any fee in the quote.
- Prepare your documents early. Gran Max vans are commercial vehicles sold only to SSM-registered companies. You will need the director's NRIC and driving licence, the company's SSM registration documents and its latest 6 months of company bank statements.
- Compare financing offers properly. Check whether the rate is fixed or variable, and compare total repayment, not just the monthly figure. See our financing guide and loan calculator.
- Confirm warranty and servicing. Gran Max vans carry a 5-year / 150,000 km warranty, whichever comes first. Daihatsu's website lists its authorised service centres and its door-to-door mobile service.
- Plan for body modifications. If you convert a Pick-Up into a box van, chiller or mobile cafe, the work is a vehicle modification. BJAK lists modified commercial vehicles as needing a special inspection, and we handle the registration and inspection for you.
- Check the dealer is authorised. Daihatsu commercial vehicles in Malaysia are distributed by Daihatsu (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. Ask any dealer to show that they are authorised, and visit the showroom before you pay.
After you drive away
Commercial vehicles need periodic inspection under the Road Transport Act 1987; BJAK lists the interval as every six months. Diary your first inspection date and keep servicing records. Overloading and worn tyres are common reasons commercial vehicles are flagged, so know your vehicle's permitted load. Daihatsu Malaysia quotes 750 kg for the Gran Max van and 800 kg for the Pick-Up.
